Ever
since the late Sixties, Govt. of India, through
its various agencies like DST, AICTE, etc. has
taken various initiatives to promote entrepreneurship
among engineering students. While the quest and
the
concern is as alive today as it was four decades
ago, the emphasis has undergone a radical change.
In
the early sixties, through the seventies and eighties,
we often thought of Entrepreneurship
as an alternate career choice
for the engineering students. In the present
days, with the job market opening up, employment
opportunities for engineering students may not
be as critical
as was earlier.
However,
in the emerging scenario, a different set of factors
which are more healthier and positive have necessitated
the promotion of entrepreneurship
among the students. Today, technology is considered
to be the front runner in providing competitive
cutting edge to any economic activity. This is
more evident in sectors like software development,
pharma, bio-technology, engineering
services, etc. The technology driven environment
has added a new dimension to the quest for promotion
of entrepreneurship among engineering
/ management students.
In
the prevailing scenario, Technological / Management
Institutions often boast of near 100% job placement
for their
students and strive to create their identity around
the same. But in the days to come the basis to
identify an excellent institution will depend
on how many entrepreneurs
it created rather
than how many students could find lucrative placements.
It
is against the above back-ground that the need
to re-orient the capacity and capability of the
faculties
assumes greater significance. The Faculty Development
Programme on Entrepreneurship Development seeks
to address this
crucial issue. |
